ACADEMIC PROGRAM

Atlanta Unbound Academy is founded on the belief that all students have the potential to be and do anything they want, and that it is a privilege for school leadership and staff to support them as they make their dreams become reality. AUA will make good on this belief by creating an academic program that prepares students for continued success in high school, and ultimately, to be competitive college applicants & graduates and leaders of their community.

The AUA academic program is the result of more than a decade of experience and research led by the school’s founder and principal. Through the lens of culturally relevant instruction, AUA will utilize the best practices of high-performing charter schools and models to focus on rigorous academics, critical thinking skills, and mastering the habits of mind that position and empower our students for competitive academic performance.

BTC STORY

Atlanta Unbound Academy is an official affiliate and lab school of the Black Teach Collaborative (BTC). The mission of the BTC is to “engage, develop, and support an intergenerational collective of Black educators who will ensure that Black children achieve at high levels academically while simultaneously preparing them with the intellectual, social, emotional, and cultural capital to actively participate in the ongoing advancement of their communities.” The BTC will provide the lens through which the Atlanta Unbound Academy's curriculum is developed and instructional philosophy is implemented, and the BTC will serve as the training & support system for the school’s teachers and leaders.

Significant research shows that Black teachers add value to Black students’ outcomes and that representation of student cultures in the teaching staff and instructional decisions supports students’ academic and socio-emotional growth. While the cultural relevance and representation of empowered teachers of color benefits students of all races and cultures, AUA’s partnership with BTC provides resources and guidance uniquely beneficial to the students AUA is likely to serve.

We will operate as a BTC partner school which means that teachers have access to professional development that support and creates spaces for teachers to reflect, learn and embrace a commitment to ongoing growth and development to their craft in serve to their students and community.

Everyday this looks like --

  • Seeing people that look like them in books
  • Murals on the walls of Black professional people
  • Words of affirmation from family members on the walls
  • Pictures of students and their families on the walls leading to their classrooms
  • Teachers asking students to think critically about text they read to develop their own opinions.

Your child will benefit from this in these ways --

  • Research shows that the more you affirm racial identities in students the better academic outcomes are for students
  • Builds self esteem in children
  • Better prepared and equipped to handle racial injustice as they encounter them in life.
